Gene Walker more >
At 17, Gene was one of the first to deliver mail while riding a motorcycle. The daily riding helped him to refine his skills. In 1912, he entered a motorcycle race at the Alabama State Fair and won the five-mile race. He was hooked -- and joined an Indian dealership in Birmingham. Later, he went to work at the Indian factory to learn the nuts and bolts of building racing machines and became a pro racer in 1914. Gene's first National win was earned in 1915 and was followed by several more, including the Dodge City 300, where he placed third. World War I stopped all racing until the 1919 season, when he won six of 13 events and also set three track records on both boards and dirt tracks. Gene won races and set records the following season as well, and recorded his last win at a five-mile, board track event in Los Angeles in 1924. He was considered the most talented racer of his time and was known for his sportsmanship and concern for safety. Gene won 19 National championships in his 10-year career.
