Eddie began his part-time racing career in 1916 on borrowed motorcycles and in 1925 began racing full-time. He won AMA National titles that year and again in 1927 while riding Harley-Davidsons. He designed and built his own motorcycle, the J-B Special (Jones-Brinck). While in Australia during the winter of 1926, Eddie won a number of races and set new speed records. He later built a Harley-Davidson 21.35ci (350cc) "Peashooter" motor that rivaled the larger engines of the time. He was killed in a 1927 track accident.

Smokin' Joe started racing in 1918 but was noticed for winning a 100-mile championship with an average speed of 100.36 while riding a Harley-Davidson on July 4, 1925, in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He then won three national titles (10, 25, and 50 mile championships) on September 7, 1925 on the Harley but switched to Excelsior the following year. A 1927 track accident seriously injured him and killed Eddie Brinck. Joe got back on his bike a year later and won two championships for hillclimbing. After the Depression forced Excelsior to close in 1931, he returned to Harley and promptly won eight of 16 dirt track and hill climb nationals -- and later that year won 10 races in a row. On March 13, 1937, Joe rode a streamlined Harley to a speed record of 136.183mph at Daytona Beach. After winning a total of 49 National championships during his racing career, Joe later became an aviation mechanic for Howard Hughes and a crewmember on the Spruce Goose; a crew chief for Indianapolis 500 teams, and an official at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the 1960s. He died on November 10, 1973. more > photos >
